Environmental field screening has long run on static instruments: a reading is a reading, and the error profile is assumed rather than measured. This session traces the shift to adaptive, learning field instruments — and the difficulty of communicating that shift to an industry whose habits were built around tools that never improve. We will look at recent evaluations of field vapour and chloride screening methods, and at new ways of reporting effectiveness where decision performance — sensitivity, specificity, and a zero-false-negative record — rather than correlation alone carries the case. The through-line is a value position, and a simple proposition: a screening tool with no published error profile does not have fewer errors, it has errors nobody counted.
