Wetland Knowledge Exchange December 2026 Webinar

Beneath the Surface: Reviewing Stressors and Indicators for Canadian Prairie Wetland Monitoring

Canadian Prairie pothole wetlands provide essential flood mitigation, water purification, and wildlife habitat, but face severe degradation from agricultural drainage and land conversion. Effective monitoring is crucial to manage these impacts, and evidence syntheses can help by revealing wetland components that consistently react to specific stressors. In this webinar, we will dive into our recent systematic review that mapped how human and natural drivers alter wetland states. We will talk about potential biological indicators of wetland degradation, dominant stressor pathways, and research gaps. You will also learn how to query the data yourself using our open-access web dashboard.

Key Takeaways:

- Candidate Bioindicators: Empirical support for tracking bird and plant metrics in agricultural landscapes.

- Dominant Stressor Pathways: Evidence linking agricultural activity to water contamination and subsequent biological impacts.

- Literature Gaps: Data scarcity in the Parkland subregion, urban wetlands, and carbon storage.

- Interactive Tool: A live demonstration on how to query the database by subregion, stressor, or biological group to inform local management.
