  • 20 years of research experience in upland and peatland biogeochemistry, including carbon and nitrogen cycling, greenhouse gases and water quality, process modelling, long-term and large-scale data analysis. Interests include the effects of changing atmospheric deposition on freshwater acidity, nitrogen and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) loss; land-use and deposition impacts on peatland greenhouse gas emissions; long-term environmental change impacts on terrestrial and biogeochemistry and biodiversity; and the translation of scientific process understanding into policymaking and ecosystem service valuation.
  • Principal investigator on projects for NERC, Defra, DECC, Welsh Government, conservation agencies and the Forestry Commission with a total value exceeding £3.5m.
  • Co-PI or work package leader on projects for funders including Defra, NERC, Welsh and Scottish Governments, EU, conservation agencies, energy supply industry.
  • CEH coordinator for the Conwy Carbon Catchment (since 2005) and UK Upland Waters Monitoring Network (since 2001).
  • Supervisor for 7 completed PhD students, 8 current students.
  • Author of over 100 peer-reviewed journal publications.
