The Canadian Model for Peatlands (CaMP) tracks carbon flow through the environment. CaMP was primarily developed using data from western and southern boreal forests, consequently, it is less suitable for very wet peatlands or areas with permafrost, such as parts of the Hudson Bay Lowlands. To address these limitations, two modules were developed: the Permafrost Module and the Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) Module.
Carbon of the Past, Present, and Future: Peatland Carbon Modelling in the Hudson Bay Lowlands, produced by Natural Resources Canada (2026), introduces wetlands, carbon cycling, CaMP, its new modules, and opportunities to contribute data through the ArcGIS Survey123 app.
The guide also outlines standard field methods for measuring biomass, productivity, peat depth, peat cores, greenhouse gas exchange, water table depth, soil temperature, active layer thickness, DOC, and stream discharge. Combined with clear illustrations and plain language, it is a valuable resource for communicating peatland carbon science in Canada.
