Join in this celebration event and witness the official launch of the IPCA Knowledge Basket!

Indigenous governments are at the forefront of protecting the largest, healthiest, and most biodiverse areas in what is now known as Canada. Indigenous approaches to conservation have increasingly proven to be more effective and successful than state-led, “fortress conservation” approaches.

However, it is only relatively recently that we have seen a promising shift, with increased visibility and recognition of Indigenous leadership in conservation on a national scale.

Join us virtually on June 20th from 3pm AT / 2pm ET / 1pm CT / 12pm MT / 11am PT to celebrate the collective efforts of Indigenous leaders, organizations, and communities in addressing biodiversity loss and climate change, while healing relationships with the lands, waters, and between humans and our non-human relatives, for the benefit of all.

In collaboration with the Narwhal, the Indigenous Leadership Initiative, and the IISAAK OLAM Foundation, and the World Wildlife Fund Canada, we will reflect on the wisdom and vision brought forward by Indigenous leaders from generations past; examine current opportunities and challenges for Indigenous conservation leadership; and explore a future where conservation is Indigenous-led.

As part of this celebration, we will officially launch the IPCA Knowledge Basket  – a digital space that holds and shares resources to inform and support Indigenous-led conservation initiatives, including Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs). A legacy initiative of the Conservation through Reconciliation Partnership, this digital space was created to honour, celebrate, and catalyze Indigenous-led conservation for the health and vitality of future generations.

Moderated by: Denise Balkissoon (Ontario Bureau Chief, The Narwhal)
