Alberta Environment and Protected Areas Published Two New Policies on Pit, Borrow Pit and Quarry Reclamation

Mineral Wetland

The Directive for Reclamation Certificate Site Assessments for Pits and Quarries – Cultivated Lands, directs pit and quarry operators on the requirements for assessing all or part of a reclaimed pit or quarry, in support of a reclamation certificate application. The document provides clarity on the various landscape, soils and vegetation parameters to be measured, thresholds and desired outcomes for each parameter, assessment methodologies and approaches, application pathways, and a framework for providing a professional rationale and justifications to give meaning to the assessment data and support decisions.

The Design Guidelines for Reclaiming Pits, Borrow Pits and Quarries to Marsh Complexes describes the upfront design requirements for reclaiming a pit, borrow pit or quarry to a mineral wetland with diverse wetland vegetation communities – defined in the document as a marsh complex. Operators are required to follow the document when they choose to reclaim all or a portion of their site to mineral wetland.
