Is soil mounding contributing to the successful restoration of seismic lines in Alberta, Canada?

Wednesday, November 3, 2021

12:00pm – 1:00pm MDT

Open to anyone interested in science and our boreal backyards (no need to be a researcher or industry professional)! As part of the Boreal Nature Series, this webinar features Dr. Jaime Pinzon from Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), Canadian Forest Service.

Oil and gas exploration leaves a significant footprint on the landscape, predominantly in much of northern Alberta, where thousands of kilometers of seismic lines dissect various ecosystems throughout the boreal forest. In particular, treed peatlands are of interest, as natural recovery is minimal, having an important contribution to forest fragmentation. Efforts are in place for mitigating this footprint through human intervention, with the expectation that treatments will successfully return forest cover along seismic lines. Soil mounding is a commonly used technique that aims to restore topography and enhance growing conditions for planted seedlings and natural regeneration. Thus, with this study we are assessing early responses following treatment application, with respect to environmental conditions and biodiversity, with the purpose of providing baseline knowledge on whether this technique contributes to improving restoration of disturbed sites.

Jaime Pinzon is a Research Scientist with the Department of Natural Resources Canada (Canadian Forest Service), based in Edmonton at the Northern Forestry Centre. Currently, Jaime is involved with NRCan’s Cumulative Effects and Sustainable Forest Management Programs, where his research focuses on spider ecology and overall biodiversity responses to natural and human disturbances, with particular interest in the context of forest management and land restoration.
