Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC×GC-FID) is a powerful technique for studying complex chemical mixtures. In this presentation, we explore how GC×GC-FID can be used to identify source traits from samples rich in biogenic material, such as those containing plant or microbial components. These types of samples are often difficult to analyze because their many overlapping compounds make it hard to distinguish one source from another. Using GC×GC-FID, we can separate and visualize these compounds in much greater detail, revealing unique chemical patterns linked to specific sources. We will review some cases where the use of GC×GC-FID provides a valuable tool for environmental and analytical investigations dealing with complex organic mixtures.
