This presentation provides a brief overview of how Tier 1, hazard-based guidelines for chloride and salinity were derived, and to promote the future development of risk-based Tier 1 guidelines. Data gaps in current guidelines will also be identified. Although there can be benefits to hazard-based guidelines, risk based guidelines are often more applicable. If hydrocarbons can have risk-based Tier 1 soil endpoints, why can’t chloride guidelines be risk based? It is noted that the development of Tier 2 or Tier 3 endpoints can often result in reduced remediation volumes, however detailed Tier 2 or Tier 3 endpoint development can be costly and time-consuming. Development and introduction of risk based chloride/salinity guidelines will allow for more effective management of chloride related environmental liabilities and an expedited time to closure.
