Managing assets at the end of their productive lives is a requirement for all industrial development. While many sites do not have chemical impacts from the industrial activities conducted, cleanup and/or monitoring are required where soil or water have chemical parameters exceeding regulatory guidelines. These activities require time and resources to complete and are often expensive.

Challenges with regulatory guidelines often lead to high costs, multi-year timelines and difficulties in reaching regulatory closure. Challenges are often experienced in correctly applying generic Alberta Tier 1 Soil and Groundwater Remediation guidelines, which are modified based on numerous factors. When completed, this tool will support the appropriate application of the generic guidelines, which is expected to decrease overall costs by limiting soil remediation, groundwater monitoring and timelines to those truly required to achieve regulatory closure.

The web-based Tier 1 and 2 guideline calculator we created, which needs your input, includes the following features:

  1. Tier 1 guideline support module that allows users to create an output of references to the specific sections of the various generic guideline documents that apply to their site.
  2. A Tier 2 guideline modification tool for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes, and petroleum hydrocarbon (PHC) fractions F1-F4. This module allows the user to calculate site-specific guidelines for their site by changing the parameters allowed under the Alberta Tier 2 Soil and Groundwater Remediation Guidelines.

This workshop will ensure that environmental professionals and regulators understand how to use the calculator and recognize the opportunities and limits provided by this tool. Participants will be asked to provide evaluation and feedback to help inform future iterations to ensure the tool is as useful as possible.

Each session will be:

  • 1hr 30 mins followed by a question and answer period
  • Interactive
  • Provide opportunity for feedback on the tool
