Due to COVID-19, The BC Wildlife Federation's Wetlands Insitute has been formatted into a virtual Speaker Series- a series of stand-alone webinars and workshops hosted throughout the Fall, covering topics that are of interest to those working in the environmental sector with wetlands (including environmental education).
Please join us to learn more about the cultural value of wetlands and the process of archeological assessments when working in or near wetlands.
Guest Speakers:
- Evelyn George is a Former Councillor of Lake Babine Nation and has a passion for wetlands. Evelyn will speak on her perspective on how wetlands have intrinsic cultural value to her and her community.
- Dr. Genevieve Hill is the Collections Manager and Researcher at the Royal BC Museum. Genevieve began studying archaeology in 2000, obtaining a BA from UVic and an MA and PhD from the University of Exeter where she focused on wetland archaeology. She also worked as a consulting archaeologist, and as a Project Officer at the BC Archaeology Branch before taking her current position as Collection Manager and Researcher of the BC Archaeology Collection in the Indigenous Collections and Repatriation Department of the Royal BC Museum. Her research focuses on Indigenous use of wetlands and the role of perception and policy in the identification and preservation of cultural sites.
This workshop is suitable for consultants, planners, environmental/conservation groups, government representatives, First Nations, environmental educators, and engaged community members. Participants are invited to join the workshop with a wetland project or program that they wish to implement in their community and/or have a high propensity to initiate a project/program in the future.
This experience will also provide you access to a network of individuals who will help you successfully complete your local conservation project(s). You will leave with the skills, support, and confidence you need to make a difference in the world of wetland conservation. The BC Wildlife Federation offers follow-up support and resources to participants who complete the workshop, for up to 3 years post-workshop. Full-time participants are eligible to receive a certificate after successfully completing the workshop.
