Peatland Science Symposium 2026 - PERG and Can-Peat

On February18, 2026, at Université Laval (Quebec City)

The next PERG and Can-Peat Peatland Science Symposium will be held on Wednesday, February 18, 2026

Venue: room Le Cercle (ADJ-4512), Alphonse-Desjardins building, 2325 rue de l'Université, Université Laval (Quebec City, QC).

The 2026 Peatland Science Symposium will be jointly hosted by the Peatland Ecology Research Group (PERG) and Can-Peat.

The Symposium will consist of presentations and posters from these teams on the latest Canadian peatland research.

The symposium will begin with a keynote presentation from Dr. Nicole Balliston, from Laurentian University. Nicole is wetland ecohydrologist specializing in boreal peatlands, studying hydrology, biogeochemistry, and climate resilience in Canada’s northern landscapes. Her presentation, entitled "On Shared Ground: Co-Created Insights into Peatland Hydrology and Carbon Dynamics in Northern Ontario Peatlands”, will address the peatland complexes located at the transition between the Canadian Shield and the Hudson Bay Lowlands, which remain among the least documented hydrological and carbon-rich landscapes in Canada. This keynote will share the story of a multi-year research program built through a strong partnership with Moose Cree First Nation, grounded in land-based knowledge, community priorities, and co-developed approaches to environmental monitoring.

This event will provide the Canadian peatland research community with a unique opportunity to gather and exchange ideas. Discussions will cover a variety of topics, ranging from understanding processes in Sphagnum and minerotrophic peatland ecosystems to peatland restoration, to the new acrotelm harvesting method, including the dynamics of carbon exchange in these ecosystems, options for mitigating impacts on wetlands as well as research approaches conducted in consultation with First Peoples
