At the 2012 LiDAR workshop Brian Sawyer and Phil Mckenzie discuss the process of acquiring and managing LiDAR data for the Government of Alberta. A review of how GOA decided to use LiDAR data is reviewed, including how departments other than SRD were involved. The value of LiDAR data to GOA is discussed - there are currently 23 projects relying on the data and counting. Currently 280,000 km2 are complete. Managing the volume of data is a challenge.

Brian Sawyer is Section Head, Data Acquisition and Phil Mckenzie is Section Head, Data Management for the Resource Information Management Branch, Corporate Services Branch, Sustainable Resource Development.

In March 2012, over 300 people gathered in Edmonton to participate in a 2-day workshop about how LiDAR technology is being used in Alberta, and the potential future applications for LiDAR data. The Land-use Knowledge Network was able to record the presentations.
