Reclamation certification means different things to different people depending on their expertise, background and knowledge of reclamation practices and requirements. In Alberta, successful reclamation has always been assessed based on a number of indicators, however those indicators have changed with time as our knowledge and reclamation practices have evolved. Determining appropriate indicators for measuring and monitoring reclamation success and ecological recovery rates can be challenging and often involves trade-offs. In this talk I will discuss the process involved with indicator selection and subsequent implementation in the ABMI’s Ecological Recovery Monitoring program from a soils perspective.
