Natural Climate Solutions for Canada

Alongside the steep reductions needed in fossil fuel emissions, natural climate solutions (NCS) are readily deployable options that can provide much-needed reductions in emissions of greenhouse gases. We estimate the mitigation potential of 24 NCS related to the protection, management, and restoration of natural systems in Canada that deliver mitigation while also providing numerous co-benefits, such as enhanced soil productivity, clean air and water, and biodiversity conservation. We find NCS can provide an important contribution to emissions reductions by 2030, such that combined with efforts to reduce fossil fuel use, these actions can help Canada meet its climate goals.
