The conservation, reclamation, and closure requirements for mines, pits and quarries were reviewed for six jurisdictions across the globe. Included in this assessment are British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Northwest Territories, Texas, USA and Queensland, Australia. The information collected is intended to support Alberta Environment and Protected Areas (EPA) in the finalization of the DRAFT Directive for Reclamation Certificate Site Assessments for Pits and Quarries (for both Forested Lands and Cultivated Lands) and will be considered in the development or update of any other regulatory tool related to mines, pits and quarries in Alberta.

The bulk of the report provides a summary of the regulatory requirements and processes associated with the development of mines, pits, and quarries. The summaries are followed by a brief analysis of each jurisdiction, and where possible, a comparison is made to Alberta.

The Appendix compares the information collected regarding pits from each jurisdiction to the DRAFT Directive for Reclamation Certificate Site Assessments for Pits and Quarries.
