The Vermillion River watershed region, found in central Alberta between Edmonton and Lloydminster, is home to residents and farmers who rely on the watershed for drinking water, agriculture, and industry. Wetlands are a vital component of a watershed network, providing water filtration and storage to help mitigate flood and drought effects in the region. Historically, wetland drainage in the watershed was encouraged to maximize agricultural production in the region, but the importance of wetlands has become more prominent in watershed management in recent years.
In 2016 an aerial survey of the Vermillion River watershed resulted in a partnership between the North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance and the Vermillion River Watershed Alliance to establish the Vermillion River Watershed Restoration and Enhancement Project. This story map outlines the efforts that have been made in the watershed to restore ecological function to the region.
