On February 6, 2013 the fRI Water Program hosted a workshop entitled Advances in Knowledge of Riparian Processes, Hydrological Functions, Forest Management Mapping Tools and Monitoring Procedures.  Presentations from this workshop were captured on video by the Alberta Land-use Knowledge Network.

Dr.Rick Bonar describes how riparian mapping is used to define riparian ecological areas and the management strategy for those areas. Better digital mapping products (LiDAR, satellite imagery) can lead to better definition of riparian areas than existing rules that define riparian widths. He finishes by describing some trials that approximate fire in riparian areas to see how regeneration has occurred in riparian areas that were partially harvested.

Dr. Rick Bonar is President, Foothills Research Institute, and Chief Biologist, Hinton Wood Products, West Fraser Mills Ltd. Hinton Alberta. His presentation on Ecosystem-based Riparian Management was made at the Foothills Research Institute's Workshop for its Water Program on Feb. 6, 2013.
