6PPD-quinone is a transformation product of the most widely used rubber tire antioxidant, 6PPD. It enters aquatic systems primarily from road-way runoff. Recently, 6PPD-quinone was identified as the cause of urban runoff mortality syndrome of coho salmon in the pacific Northwest of the United States. In addition to this species, several other species of salmonids, including brook trout and rainbow, are known to be sensitive to 6PPD-quinone. In Alberta, nothing is known about concentrations of 6PPD-quinone entering urban rivers that are critical fish habitat. In this presentation, initial data regarding occurrences of 6PPD-quinone in urban stormwater in Edmonton, Calgary, and Lethbridge will be presented. Potential implication for fish health will be discussed.
