Resource Type
Grassland birds are among the steepest declining bird groups in North America, largely due to habitat loss associated with grassland conversion to cropland and shrub encroachment. To overcome this continent-wide conservation problem, science-based decision support tools are needed to allocate limited resources effectively. The Canadian Wildlife Service, in collaboration with government and NGO partners in the USA, are developing open source, breeding range-wide species density models for dozens of landbird species. I will provide an overview of these models and some real-world examples of their utility for informing conservation.
