How is caribou habitat changing over time, and how can we consistently track those changes across large and diverse landscapes?
The Caribou Habitat Information Platform (CHIP) is a new tool for understanding and tracking how landscapes within caribou ranges are changing over time. CHIP brings together transparent, spatially explicit metrics to describe the extent, type, and recovery of disturbance across caribou ranges in Alberta and British Columbia.
This webinar will provide an introduction to CHIP and a walkthrough of the key metrics that make up the platform. We’ll explore how CHIP measures human and natural disturbance, accounts for habitat recovery, and summarizes landscape change in ways that can be consistently tracked through time. The goal is to provide a practical overview of what the metrics represent, how they are calculated, and how they can be used to understand the current and changing state of caribou habitat.
