A pilot scale constructed wetland was built at the Strachan Gas Plant to evaluate its ability to
treat dissolved phase hydrocarbons in groundwater. The overall objective was to assess the feasibility of a constructed wetland as a cost effective treatment alternative to conventional
mechanical treatment systems, such as an air stripper.

The pilot-scale wetland was constructed in December 1996, with appropriate wetland vegetation
planted in July 1997. Inflow of hydrocarbon contaminated water to the wetland began in September 1997.

The overall objectives of the wetland project were to:

  1. Determine the hydrocarbon treatment capacity of the pilot scale wetland;
  2. Assess wetland effectiveness relative to mechanical treatment, based on treatment capacity and cost.
