Soil sterilants are non-selective, persistent, residual herbicides that render treated soil unfit for plant growth; applied to ~60,000 sites in Alberta.  Remediation on these sites is stalled due to challenging nature of contaminants and cost associated with conventional remediation approaches.  A Soil Sterilants Program was initiated by InnoTech Alberta and several industry partners to address this issue.  The program objective is to develop a collective understanding of the scope of sites impacted by soil sterilants (bromacil and tebuthiuron) and the specific challenges associated with their remediation and management.  Twelve research projects will be completed in three program areas (Identification and Delineation; Risk Assessment and Management; and, Remediation).
