This manual discusses the impact of pipeline construction on agricultural land, including land with potential for agriculture. The document addresses reasons why certain soils are more sensitive to impact than others and highlights specific activities of pipeline construction which create those impacts. Based on this discussion, five common soil handling procedures for conservation of agricultural lands during pipeline construction are discussed in terms of their relative effectiveness for
different soil types.
This manual has been designed to assist pipeline planners in determining optimal soil handling procedures based on soil type, seasonal conditions and equipment availability. The manual is neither a regulation, nor a standard; its intended use is as a reference document for those involved in pipeline planning.
