Joey Temple shows what watershed education looks like in the Red Deer River watershed. The Red Deer River Watershed Alliance targets youth as well as adults in its watershed education. Watershed education is more than just water. Joey Temple describes the subwatersheds of the Red Deer River and some of the challenges in each. The relationships of urban runoff and wastewater treatment and the rural impacts on riparian shorelines, septic field runoff and manure spreading and runoff are issues the RDRWA discusses with students. The curriculum discusses wetland loss as farmers drain sloughs to improve field efficiency and irrigation withdrawals and return flows. There is also education around forestry and oil and gas practices.
Joey Temple is an Outreach Coordinator with the Red Deer River Watershed Alliance.
From March 12-14th, 2013, people involved in water issues in Alberta met in Red Deer to discuss ideas and plans for managing water resources. The conference, jointly hosted by the Canadian Water Resources Association (CWRA) Alberta Chapter and Alberta Watershed Planning & Advisory Councils (WPACs), emphasized the integrated planning that is necessary for water management in the future.
The Alberta Land-use Knowledge Network was able to record many of the keynote speakers and conference presentations.
