Dave Coates, research silviculturist for the BC Ministry of Forests, Land and Natural Resource Operations, talks about understanding the recovery and self-organization of Mountain Pine Beetle (MPB) impacted stands. He discusses the operating land base in B.C. and the amount of land impacted by the MPB attack; factors involved in natural regeneration after MPB attacks such as canopy condition and seed source, and regeneration dynamics post-beetle – including expected regeneration rate. Coates addressed strategies to sustain the forest industry and the problems that are expected to exist in 15 to 35 years, and considers the factors involved in deciding whether an area of land should be actively restored, or left alone so it can restore itself.

This presentation was a part of the Mountain Pine Beetle Information Exchange Forum in April of 2014.

This presentation was recorded and originally hosted online by the Alberta Land Use Knowledge Network (LUKN).
