Temperature, Moisture and Freeze–thaw Controls on CO2 Production in Soil Incubations From Northern Peatlands
Resource
Peat accumulation in high latitude wetlands represents a natural long-term carbon sink, resulting from the cumulative excess of growing season net ecosystem production over non-growing season (NGS)...
The Biophysical Climate Mitigation Potential of Boreal Peatlands During the Growing Season
Resource
Peatlands and forests cover large areas of the boreal biome and are critical for global climate regulation. They also regulate regional climate through heat and water vapour exchange with the...
The Boreal-Arctic Wetland and Lake Dataset
Resource
Here we present the Boreal–Arctic Wetland and Lake Dataset (BAWLD), a land cover dataset based on an expert assessment, extrapolated using random forest modelling from available spatial datasets of...
The Direct and Habitat-mediated Influence of Climate on the Biogeography of Boreal Caribou in Canada
Resource
Effective species conservation efforts require insight into whether a species’ extent of occurrence may shift due to changing climate, habitat loss, or both. The extent of occurrence of the threatened...
The Effects of Water Management on the CO2 Uptake of Sphagnum Moss in a Reclaimed Peatland
Resource
This resource is available on an external database and may require a paid subscription to access it. It is included on the CCLM to support our goal of capturing and sharing the breadth of all...
The Essential Carbon Service Provided by Northern Peatlands
Resource
Northern peatlands have cooled the global climate by accumulating large quantities of soil carbon (C) over thousands of years. Maintaining the C sink function of these peatlands and their immense long...
The Feasibility of Mechanical Compression to Reduce Capillary Barrier Effect, and Increase CO2 Sequestration in a Restored Cutover Peatland
Resource
Ten years after restoration was implemented at the Bois-des-Bel peatland (BdB) in Quebec, there was limited hydrological connectivity between the regenerated Sphagnum moss and the remnant cutover peat...
The Feasibility of Mechanical Compression to Reduce the Capillary Barrier Effect, and Increase CO2 Sequestration in a Restored Cutover Peatland
Resource
Ten years after restoration was implemented at the Bois-des-Bel peatland (BdB) in Quebec, there was limited hydrological connectivity between the regenerated Sphagnum moss and the remnant cutover peat...
The Hydrology of Interconnected Bog Complexes in Discontinuous Permafrost Terrains
Resource
In the zone of discontinuous permafrost, the cycling and storage of water within and between wetlands is poorly understood. The presence of intermittent permafrost bodies tends to impede and re-direct...
The Impact of a Black Spruce (Picea mariana) Plantation on Carbon Exchange in a Cutover Peatland in Western Canada
Resource
This resource is available on an external database and may require a paid subscription to access it. It is included on the CCLM to support our goal of capturing and sharing the breadth of all...
The Impact of Black Spruce (Picea mariana) Plantation on Carbon Exchange in a Cutover Peatland in Western Canada
Resource
This study determined the effect of a 7-year-old black spruce (Picea mariana) plantation on the carbon balance of a cutover peatland.
The Multisource Vegetation Inventory (MVI): A Satellite-Based Forest Inventory for the Northwest Territories Taiga Plains
Resource
Wall-to-wall 30 m raster maps of broad forest type, stand height, crown closure, stand volume, total volume, aboveground biomass, and stand age were created for a ~400,000 km2 area, validated with independent data, and generalized into a polygon GIS layer resembling a traditional FI map. The MVI project showed that a reasonably accurate FI map for large, remote, predominantly non-inventoried boreal regions can be obtained at a low cost by combining limited field data with remote sensing data from multiple sources.
The Potential of Peatlands as Nature-based Climate Solutions

The Role of Hummocks in Re-establishing Black Spruce Forest Following Permafrost Thaw
Resource
This resource is available on an external database and may require a paid subscription to access it. It is included on the CCLM to support our goal of capturing and sharing the breadth of all...
The Unrecognized Importance of Carbon Stocks and Fluxes from Swamps in Canada and the USA
Resource
Swamps are a highly significant wetland type in North America both in terms of areal extent and their role in terrestrial carbon cycling. These wetlands, characterized by woody vegetation cover...
“These Trees Have Stories to Tell”: Linking Dënesǫ́łıné Oral History of Caribou Use with Trample Scar Frequency on Black Spruce Roots at Ɂedacho Kué
Resource
This paper describes linkages between knowledge derived from Dënesǫ́łıné oral history and quantitative dendroecological analysis of trample scars on black spruce ( Picea mariana) root samples...

Trophic Consequences of Terrestrial Eutrophication for a Threatened Ungulate
Resource
Conservation actions directed at the proximate cause of caribou decline have been more successful in the near term than those directed further along the trophic chain.
