Ruijun Sun is a Senior Research Engineer with the Saskatchewan Research Council, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
He reports on consolidation testing of oil sands tailings from Total's Joslyn oil sands mine. The use of fly ash to increase deposit strength and freeze/thaw to promote water release were tested. General consolidation characteristics also were measured.
One freeze/thaw cycle resulted in 40% of the water being expelled and consolidation strength that exceeded Directive 74 (AER).
