Dr. Clive Welham provided the introductory lecture at the seminar on Resiliency of Reclaimed Boreal Forest Landscapes. He talked about the two sides of the coin, ecosystem resilience and engineering resilience. He finishes Part 1 of this lecture on the role of keystone species in ecological resiliency. Part 2 describes how the concept of resilience could be applied to reclamation. It shifts the emphasis of reclamation from not just restoring vegetation but also restoring natural processes. Scale is important in considering natural processes. He contrasts the objectives of a resource management paradigm and a resilience-oriented paradigm. And he talks about institutional barriers.

Dr. Clive Welham is a Research Associate at the Department of Forest Resources Management, University of British Columbia, and Founding Partner of 3Green Tree Ecosystem Services Ltd.

His presentation was part of the seminar on Resiliency of Reclaimed Boreal Forest Landscapes, sponsored by the Oils Sands Research and Information Network (OSRIN) and the Department of Renewable Resources, University of Alberta, Jan 22, 2013.

This presentation was recorded and originally hosted online by the Alberta Land Use Knowledge Network (LUKN).
