An Assessment of Sampling Designs Using SCR Analyses to Estimate Abundance of Boreal Caribou
Resource
Abstract Accurately estimating abundance is a critical component of monitoring and recovery of rare and elusive species. Spatial capture–recapture (SCR) models are an increasingly popular method for...
Assessment of the Barren Ground Caribou Die-off During Winter 2015-2016 Using Passive Microwave Observations
Resource
Study investigates a die-off of 50 Arctic Barren Ground caribous on Prince Charles Island (Nunavut, Canada), in the summer of 2016, using passive microwave observations.
Biodiversity Offsets and Caribou Conservation in Alberta: Opportunities and Challenges
Resource
We conclude that a number of actions to offset impacts of development and achieve no net loss or net positive impact for caribou are theoretically feasible (i.e., if implemented they should work), including habitat restoration and manipulations of the large mammal predator-prey system. However, implementation challenges are substantial and include a lack of mechanisms for setting aside some resources for long periods of time, public opposition to predator control, and uncertainty associated with loss-gain calculations.
Birth Date Determines Early Calf Survival in Migratory Caribou
Resource
Abstract The decline of most caribou ( Rangifer tarandus) populations underlines the need to understand the determinants of key demographic parameters. In migratory caribou, we have limited...
Biting Flies and Activity of Caribou in the Boreal Forest
Resource
Habitat loss has been implicated in the decline of forest-dwelling caribou ( Rangifer tarandus caribou), but it is unknown how biting insects, potentially important components of boreal forest habitat...
Boreal Caribou Habitat Restoration
Resource
This overview document collects knowledge and research on restoring degraded habitat for boreal ecotype woodland caribou. The objectives for this document are outlines below. Provide an overview of...
Boreal Caribou Habitat Restoration Monitoring Framework
Resource
Feedback received from stakeholders involved in existing and potential habitat restoration programs in Northeast British Columbia’s (NE BC) boreal caribou ranges indicate there is a need for the...
Boreal Caribou Habitat Restoration on the Parker Range
Project
Organization:
This is the first collaborative, landscape range restoration project of this scale in Canada, with Golder leading this group of stakeholders through the development of the project permitting, barriers...
Boreal Caribou Habitat Restoration Operational Toolkit for British Columbia
Resource
This toolkit has been prepared as an operational handbook and is intended to guide implementation of reclamation techniques that will contribute to the restoration of caribou habitat. It is meant to...
Caribou Range Restoration Project Treatment Sites. 9 to 13 Year Follow-Up Monitoring in the Little Smoky Caribou Range
Resource
As caribou habitat restoration initiatives have become more widespread across Alberta in the last decade, key uncertainties have been recognized regarding what treatment types are appropriate for...
Conservation of Caribou (Rangifer tarandus) in Canada: An Uncertain Future
Resource
Caribou (Rangifer tarandus (L., 1758)) play a central role in the ecology and culture of much of Canada, where they were once the most abundant cervid. Most populations are currently declining, and...
Deciduous Tree Species Classification Using Object-Based Analysis and Machine Learning with Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Multispectral Data
Resource
This resource is available on an external database and may require a paid subscription to access it. It is included on the CCLM to support our goal of capturing and sharing the breadth of all...
Detection of Rain-On-Snow (ROS) Events and Ice Layer Formation Using Passive Microwave Radiometry: A Context for Peary Caribou Habitat in the Canadian Arctic
Resource
This resource is available on an external database and may require a paid subscription to access it. It is included on the CCLM to support our goal of capturing and sharing the breadth of all...
Development of Genomic Resources for Cattails (Typha), a Globally Important Macrophyte Genus
Resource
A critical knowledge gap in freshwater plant research is the lack of genetic tools necessary to answer fundamental questions about their demographic histories, adaptation and phylogenetic...
Disturbance Zones of Influence on Boreal Songbird Communities in Northeastern Alberta
Resource
Canada’s boreal forest is important habitat for many North American birds, which play a vital role in the health of forests, and provide ecosystem services. Expanding human development in northern...
DNA Metabarcoding of Faecal Pellets Reveals High Consumption of Yew (Taxus spp.) by Caribou (Rangifer tarandus) in a Lichen-poor Environment
Resource
Woodland caribou ( Rangifer tarandus caribou) are threatened in Canada because of the drastic decline in population size caused primarily by human-induced landscape changes that decrease habitat and...
